8th July 2011 Chicago

The Segway tour was a big Wow! We both thoroughly enjoyed it. It didn't take long to get used to riding a segway. There is a gyroscope in the machine and so it is a matter of moving your body forwards or backwards and light pressure on the handlebars will turn you. We had a tour guide called Jonathan who was trying to get into films. The fastest you can go is 12.5 mph and over the two hours we covered a distance of about 8.5 miles. It was great because we went along the North Shore Road, passed all the beaches. Of course, the beaches are artificial but Lake Michigan looked blue as blue. From the lake side it was a very different perspective to view Chicago and it looked very impressive. I still like this city very much. We left the lakeside and went further inland to the south end of Lincoln Park with a large statue of Lincoln resplendent in his chair! Went down and all through the posh and expensive part of Chicago city, Astor Street. Stan saw the hotel where The Rat Pack used to stay and to sing. We moved back to the Shore Road and swung left, back to Navy Pier. It was a great experience and we had visited places we had not been before.
We followed this up with a drink and food at Harry Caray's Bar. Apparently Harry was a television sport's presenter and I think mainly for baseball.
Again a longish walk back to the hotel, mainly because we found ourselves in streets below the level we needed to be.
Later in the evening we went to Memorial Park which is in the centre of Chicago and houses the Shiny Bean, which we found out was really a cloud! We sat beside it having a drink and listening to a free classical concert. It was a lovely evening, still and cool and we enjoyed our last night in Chicago.
