3rd July 2011 Washington

There was a massive thunderstorm overnight and we awoke this morning to wet roads. However the temperature had not dropped from yesterdays 93 degrees F.
We had an exciting and hot day today managing to do all the touristy bits! First we had breakfast buying from a Farmer's Market, granola bars, yoghurt and fruit. This was next to the Dupont Circle Metro Station. Interesting to see the Americans buying huge amounts of fruit, veg and herbs! The metro is very modern and very clean. Easy to follow routes, difficult to purchase tickets!. We were soon at the Smithsonian and had to come out of the cool into an almost stifling and humid heat. Our first port of call was the Washington Monument, a huge and impressive obelisk surrounded by American flags. Leading down to the reflecting pool and the Lincoln Memorial. The reflecting pool, was unfortunately reflecting mud because it is undergoing refurbishment. It was still a great experience to see these iconic landmarks. Walking down Constitution Avenue we soon reached The Ellipse, the green common ground in front of The White House. It was then quite a long walk, mainly because it was so hot, to The Capitol Building. This was getting all set up for Independence Day and the big concert that would be there tomorrow evening - a bit like Proms in the Park in Hyde Park. It was so hot (95 degrees F) we decided to walk back up The National Mall and return to Dupont Circle, have an early dinner and cool off.
