10th July 2011 St Paul to Brainerd

The first few hours were spent looking around St Paul. We have visited before but I didn't really remember much of it. St Paul is the capital of Minnesota State and is next to the city of Minneapolis, the modern and upbeat twin. St Paul is the administrative and heritage city, housing the Capitol Building, St Paul's Cathedral; the old architecture of a bygone era when the area was first settled. As well as this the Mississippi flows along side with old style paddle steamers taking tourists on a pleasant cruise with spectacular views of the city.
It takes around two and a half hours by car to get to Brainerd where Emily and Zac live. We dropped off the suitcases, donned shorts and off we went to Ernie's (a watering hole which Zac is hoping to buy in the not too distant future)to pick up the pontoon boat and we spent the rest of the day happily cruising around beautiful Gull Lake in blistering heat (90 degrees F plus), drinking, chatting and at some points, swimming! It was a thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing afternoon enjoyed by all. At the end of the day we went back to Pat's house (Zac's Dad) and grilled up Bratwurst, served in true American style with rolls, mustard and sauces. We were then treated to a real Minnesotan storm which cleared the air and enabled the temperature to drop some 20 degrees!
