7th July 2011 Chicago

So, like I asked the question Why is New York called the Big Apple? I'm now asking, Why is Chicago called The Windy City? Both answers in a few days time!

Had a long day walking and relaxing. We walked to Lake Shore Road, straight up from our hotel. Lake Michigan, one of the Great Lakes, looks just like the sea. We followed the path round past the Yacht Club and sailing school and up onto the double road bridge across the Chicago River, back onto the tow path and up to Navy Pier. Apparently at one time the site of a Naval Base although we could find no evidence of this from the history given on the pier. It is now a vibrant active place for locals and tourists to go and play. There are lots of stalls, cafes, museums and a small funfare including a Ferris Wheel which gives views of Chicago. As well as this you can book a boat ride on Lake Michigan or on the river, rent bikes or have bike tours or segway tours. As we had toured around lake Michigan on our last visit we decided to have a segway tour tomorrow. So question number three, why is a segway called a segway?!
I just had to have an orange popsicle while I was on the pier, this is layers of slush puppie and vanilla ice cream. I followed it with a candy floss, bubblegum flavour, so no lunch for me today!!
We walked away from Navy Pier and into Chicago city centre. We found a couple of shopping centres and did a little shopping and then had dinner in a Thai restaurant which overlooked the Magnificent Mile and the local beach a short distance away.
A long, long walk back to the hotel interspersed with entertainment all the way - magicians, balloon artists, beautiful flower patches, buildings, people.
Still, my kinda town!
