2nd July 2011 New York to Washington

We are now sat on the train going to Washington DC. The train passed through many dilapidated areas of industrial past before we came to Philadelphia and then we were taken over by vast stretches of water all the way to Delaware and beyond. We arrived in Washington DC some three and a half hours after leaving New York. A comfortable journey in Business Class style aircraft seats which bodes well for our overnight train ride in a few days.
Union station Washington DC was glorious and well worth a visit on its own. It was obviously built in the heyday of its era and houses majestic arches, statues and stairways all in marble and rich wood. As we had no hurry we spent some time looking around but will come back a few hours before our next train journey to explore even more.
As we left the station we could see the Capitol Building peaking out between the trees, its beautiful dome capturing the essence of Washington DC.
Our hotel (along with many others) is in the Dupont area. We walked from our hotel, once we were settled, down to the Dupont Circle and sat for a while deciding on our plans for tomorrow. The Dupont Circle houses a park with a fountain erected for Rear Admiral Dupont who had great influence over the Navy in the 1800's. It has eight roads off it at compass points, one of which is Connecticut Avenue on which our hotel resides and keep on walking some two miles south and it goes directly to Union Station. Dupont Circle has lots of shops and restaurants as well as numerous coffee shops and a metro stop. So tomorrow it's on the metro to the Smithsonian and from there to all the sights.
We came back to the hotel, had drinks and food in the Sports Bar, then for me an hour in the gym, followed by sleep ready for our exciting day tomorrow.
