1st July 2011 New York

Another early morning and it is beautiful out here at 0700 in the centre of New York. A cup of tea and a walk down 42nd Street is a real treat!
Our aim for today was to go to The Pompeii Exhibition and then to the United Nations building down by the waterfront. You may wonder why we are not doing all the big sight seeing bits of New York? Well, we did those last time we were here and this time we are just enjoying the vibrant city. We found our last visit a little disappointing, but this time we have enjoyed our time here.
The Pompeii exhibition was very good and we spent an enjoyable two hours looking at the exhibits. Particularly poignant was the room containing the people who had tried to flee from the lava and ash.
To get to the UN building we had to walk west from Broadway and across all the avenues to 1st Avenue. That meant around eight blocks of walking - not very far at all! Considering the UN is pretty important in the world, the buildings are disappointing. There is a skyscraper and a long low building. They look nothing, except, when you read about them, then they are made mainly of aluminium and marble and they cost billions. To get into the main foyer we had to go through security checks. There didn't appear to be much to see, but hey, we had the experience!
We returned via Grand Central Station, a pretty spectacular building seen in many films. It had great chandeliers and perhaps what I didn't realise is that the whole thing is below street level.
Dinner was in a diner and then the nightly trip to free wifi in Starbucks. Off to Washington tomorrow and the first trip on Amtrak.
...and why is New York called the Big Apple?
