5th July 2011 Washington to Chicago

Wasted some time at Union Station today, taking some photos, visiting the Postal Museum, eating, drinking and relaxing ready for our overnight ride to Chicago.
The station is extremely busy which surprises me as we have been told time and again that the Americans do not use public transport and that the trains and buses are not very effective. The station has trains that run to most places in the USA and most appear to be full. The station is well serviced with a huge food court and many shops both independent and international. The train has buffet services but as we are unsure how busy they are likely to get we have bought a few snacks to keep us going until we reach Chicago around 0900 tomorrow. The train leaves here at 1600, so a fair distance is to be travelled. We travel through Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana to Chicago, Illinois, a distance of some 780 miles.

The train which we are now in is a double decker with comfortable seats. I am sat in the open glass viewing car watching the world go by. The outskirts of Washington are mainly built up industrial areas. It has been announced that there is a speed restriction for the first part of the journey because of the heat, so we are moving along at about 40mph.

Well I am going to sit and enjoy this - just made our dinner reservations - will be back!

Some beautiful and spectacular scenery mainly encountered in West Virginia around a place called Harpers Ferry where the rivers Potomac and Shenandoah meet.
As dusk came down we had dinner, a chaotic, disorganised meal, running an hour late! You can only imagine the comments flying around about that experience!!
